Grammy-Nominated Singer Angie Stone Dies in Tragic Car Accident at 63

Grammy-nominated R&B and neo-soul artist Angie Stone has tragically passed away at the age of 63 following a car accident, her daughter confirmed via social media on Saturday.

Reports indicate that the Wish I Didn’t Miss You singer was traveling through Alabama with nine members of her band when their Sprinter van was involved in a fatal collision with an 18-wheeler truck.

According to WSFA 12, the crash took place just before 7 a.m. on Interstate 65, approximately two miles south of Hope Hull in Montgomery County. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency stated that multiple lanes were blocked for nearly four hours before the scene was cleared around 11 a.m. Tragically, Stone was the only fatality.

Her daughter, Diamond Stone—whom Angie shared with ex-husband Rodney Stone—shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, writing, “On the road, mind racing. Keep me and my family in your prayers.” A few hours later, she followed up with a simple yet devastating message: “My mommy is gone.”

Stone’s son, Michael D’Angelo Archer II—whom she had with singer D’Angelo—has yet to publicly comment on her passing. He had just celebrated his 28th birthday on February 28. Stone and D’Angelo, who were in a relationship during the 1990s, not only shared a son but also created chart-topping music together.

Her representative, Deborah R. Champagne, confirmed to TMZ that Stone had just finished a performance in Montgomery and was en route to another engagement when the accident occurred. Champagne, who spoke with the singer the night before, described the loss as deeply shocking and devastating for Stone’s loved ones and colleagues.

Stone had been scheduled to perform later that day at the CIAA Basketball Tournament in Baltimore, Maryland, making the accident all the more tragic.

Just a week before her passing, she had taken to Instagram to celebrate her Zeta Phi Beta Sorority sisters and promote an upcoming show.

Angie Stone’s musical journey began in the 1980s as a member of The Sequence, a pioneering South Carolina trio alongside Cheryl Cook and Gwendolyn Chisolm. As the first all-female rap group signed to Sugar Hill Records, they helped pave the way for women in hip-hop and were among the first Southern rap acts to release music on vinyl.

Throughout her career, Stone earned three Grammy nominations and remained a force in the music industry. Just last year, she achieved a No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart with her feature on Damon Little’s No Stressing.

Her legacy as a trailblazing artist and soulful voice will continue to inspire generations to come.
