GloRilla Makes History with Gospel Award Win at 2025 BET Awards

By Amanda Clemons| June 2025

In a powerful and unexpected moment at the 2025 BET Awards, Memphis rap sensation GloRilla claimed one of the night’s most meaningful honors—the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award—for her emotionally stirring single, “Rain Down On Me.” Featuring gospel legends Kirk Franklin and Maverick City Music, the track has become a cultural and spiritual touchstone, bridging the gap between hip hop and gospel in a way rarely seen before.

A Bold Crossover into Faith and Praise

Known for her gritty Southern flow and street-smart lyrics, GloRilla—real name Gloria Hallelujah Woods—stunned fans with a vulnerable, faith-driven record that showed a different side of the rising star. The song, which debuted on her 2024 album Glorious, blends traditional gospel chords with modern rap cadences, echoing themes of redemption, perseverance, and divine protection.

“I had this song in the vault for a minute,” GloRilla said during her acceptance speech. “It’s a blessing to get the Gospel award first because I owe it all to God. When Kirk said ‘yes,’ I knew it was something special.”

Industry Shock and Celebration

GloRilla’s victory sparked conversations across social media and the music industry. While many praised the bold blend of hip hop and gospel, some traditionalists in the gospel community questioned whether the song fit the criteria. Gospel veteran Deitrick Haddon voiced concerns publicly, calling for a reassessment of what the gospel category represents.

Despite the debate, fans overwhelmingly supported GloRilla’s win, applauding her sincerity, her message, and her ability to connect two seemingly opposite genres with passion and authenticity.

Kirk Franklin and Maverick City’s Influence

Kirk Franklin, a gospel icon known for fusing contemporary sound with Christian messages, was instrumental in the song’s success. His collaboration with GloRilla not only lent the track spiritual credibility but also introduced her to a wider, more diverse audience.

“Merging our worlds felt natural,” Franklin said backstage. “We’ve both seen hard times and used music to make sense of it.”

Maverick City Music added rich harmonies and soul-lifting choruses that elevated “Rain Down On Me” from a single to an anthem—one now etched in BET Awards history.

A New Era for Gospel Recognition

GloRilla’s gospel award win is more than a personal victory—it marks a cultural shift. The boundaries between genres are becoming more fluid, and artists are feeling more empowered to share their full selves, including their spirituality.

With this achievement, GloRilla becomes one of the few mainstream rappers to ever receive a gospel honor, proving that faith can find expression even in the most unexpected voices.

What’s Next?

The success of “Rain Down On Me” may open new doors for GloRilla as both an artist and a cultural figure. Rumors are already swirling about future collaborations with gospel acts and possibly an inspirational EP in 2026. For now, she stands as a testament to the power of faith, the beauty of authenticity, and the evolving soundscape of modern music.

From Memphis streets to gospel stages, GloRilla’s journey is nothing short of divine. And this latest chapter shows she’s not just a voice of her generation—she’s a vessel for something greater.
