Irv Gotti, Legendary Hip-Hop Producer and Murder Inc. Founder, Passes Away at 54

Irv Gotti, the influential music executive and co-founder of Murder Inc. Records, passed away on February 5, 2025, at the age of 54. Born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr. on June 26, 1970, in the Hollis neighborhood of Queens, New York City, Gotti was instrumental in shaping the hip-hop and R&B landscape of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Gotti began his career in the music industry as a producer and A&R executive at Def Jam Recordings, where he played a pivotal role in signing and producing for artists such as DMX and Jay-Z. In 1998, he co-founded Murder Inc. Records with his brother, Chris Gotti. The label became a powerhouse in the music industry, launching the careers of artists like Ja Rule and Ashanti. Gotti's production credits include chart-topping hits such as Ja Rule's "Always on Time" and Ashanti's "Foolish."

Throughout his career, Gotti collaborated with a range of prominent artists, including Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West, and Fat Joe. His work earned him critical acclaim, including a Grammy Award in 2004 for Best Contemporary R&B Album for Ashanti's self-titled debut.

Despite his success, Gotti faced legal challenges, including a federal investigation in the early 2000s for alleged money laundering. He and his brother were acquitted of all charges in 2005. In 2003, amid these challenges, the label rebranded as The Inc.

In early 2024, Gotti suffered a minor stroke related to his long-standing battle with diabetes, which prompted him to make significant lifestyle changes. On February 5, 2025, he died from complications related to multiple strokes and diabetes in New York City.

Tributes have poured in from across the music industry. Def Jam Recordings, where Gotti began his career, released a statement expressing deep sadness at his passing. Lyor Cohen, former chief executive of Def Jam, remembered Gotti as "one of its most creative soldiers who was hip-hop." Ja Rule, one of Murder Inc.'s flagship artists, simply wrote, "Love you…"

Irv Gotti's legacy in the music industry is marked by his innovative contributions to hip-hop and R&B, his role in developing the careers of several prominent artists, and his resilience in the face of adversity.
