Black Ambition: Empowering Underrepresented Entrepreneurs with $13 Million in Funding

Pharrell Williams' nonprofit organization, Black Ambition, has invested $13 million in underrepresented entrepreneurs since its launch.

Marking its fifth year, the Black Ambition Prize Competition returns, offering early-stage business owners the chance to receive significant financial backing. The competition spans industries such as consumer products and services, health care, media and entertainment, technology, and artificial intelligence (AI). Participants will have access to more than $1 million in funding, along with a 12-week mentorship program developed in partnership with Cinematica Labs. This initiative provides business development resources, expert guidance, and networking opportunities with investors. Since 2020, Black Ambition has supported 131 entrepreneurs, with its founder network collectively raising $280 million and generating over $265 million in revenue.

“Five years ago, Black Ambition was just an idea,” Williams remarked in a press release. “Today, it’s a powerful movement—a catalyst for change. It’s not just about giving underrepresented entrepreneurs a seat at the table; it’s about equipping them to build their own tables and establish sustainable success. Investing in diverse talent unlocks boundless potential, and this is only the beginning. Let’s continue pushing boundaries and reshaping the narrative. I’m eager to see what the next five years bring.”

Previous winners of the Black Ambition Prize Competition include Courtney Williams, who secured victory in 2021 for The Journey Pregnancy App, aimed at improving maternal health outcomes. In 2024, the grand prize was awarded to Dr. Monica Williams and Dana Roberts, co-founders of RedDrop, a company dedicated to making period kits more accessible for young girls.

“Winning Black Ambition wasn’t just about securing funding—it was a defining moment that brought validation, new opportunities, and a springboard for expansion,” Dr. Monica Williams shared in a press release. “With their investment, we’ve amplified our vision, fine-tuned our strategies, and reached new levels of achievement. Black Ambition’s support extends far beyond capital—it includes mentorship, strategic workshops, and an inspiring community of innovative founders who drive progress and accountability.”

The 2025 Black Ambition Prize Competition is currently underway, with the final showcase, Demo Day, scheduled for November. Initially, between 150 and 200 semifinalists will be selected for a three-month mentorship program. From there, 40 participants will advance to a public voting stage and receive pitch training. Ultimately, the top 20 finalists will receive funding, with select winners gaining additional resources such as pitch deck design assistance and coaching from industry leaders.

As Black Ambition celebrates its fifth anniversary, CEO Felecia Hatcher reflects on its profound impact. “This milestone is more than a marker of time—it’s evidence of what happens when vision, determination, and community come together. What started as a mission to bridge the wealth and opportunity gap has evolved into a global movement. Underrepresented founders aren’t just participating; they’re leading the charge and redefining industries.”

She added, “The journey ahead promises even greater opportunities for impact, deeper connections, and an unwavering commitment to collective success. To every entrepreneur, visionary, and changemaker—we see you, we honor you, and we stand with you. The movement continues, and one truth remains: We got us. And we are only getting started.”
