Former En Vogue singer Dawn Robinson has revealed that she has spent the past three years living in her car, describing the experience as both a challenge and a journey of self-discovery.
In a candid YouTube video posted on Tuesday March 11, Robinson shared her unconventional lifestyle choice, admitting, "You guys, for the past three years, I have been living in my car... I said it, oh my gosh, it's out."
Robinson explained that she had been living with her parents in Las Vegas in 2020 before relocating to Los Angeles at the suggestion of her former manager, who initially provided her with a place to stay. However, when that arrangement fell through, she was forced to stay in a hotel for eight months while searching for permanent housing.
She claimed that her manager obstructed her attempts to find an apartment, stating, "Sometimes people want to trap you and keep you in a situation where you're vulnerable and depending on them."
Facing continuous setbacks, Robinson began exploring alternative lifestyles and ultimately embraced "car life." Rather than continuing to struggle for traditional housing, she chose to live in her vehicle, settling near Malibu.
"I felt free," she reflected. "It was like being on a never-ending camping trip. It just felt right." She emphasized that her story was not one of hardship but of personal growth, saying, "This isn’t a sob story. This is about me learning who I am, as a person, as a woman."
Despite the sense of freedom, Robinson acknowledged the difficulties she faced, particularly after the passing of her beloved dog, Max, who died in the car. "I really am on my own," she said, noting that while she misses her family, this period of solitude has been an essential part of her journey.
Although she remains open to a more stable living situation, she does not regret her decision. "If I could have an apartment, I would," she admitted. "But I wouldn’t trade what I’ve learned from this experience. I'm proud of what I've accomplished."
She concluded her video with an inspiring message to her audience: "Be spontaneous. Do the scary. F— fear."
Robinson was one of the founding members of En Vogue, which was formed in 1989 alongside Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis, and Maxine Jones. Their debut album, Born to Sing 1990, peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard 200 and produced hit singles like "Hold On," which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their follow-up album, Funky Divas, cemented their success with songs like "My Lovin' You're Never Gonna Get It," which also peaked at No. 2, and "Free Your Mind," which became another Top 10 hit. The group’s 1996 smash "Don't Let Go" also climbed to No. 2 on the Hot 100.
Robinson departed from En Vogue in 1997 to sign with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label, later reuniting with the group briefly in 2005 and 2009. Beyond her music career, she has appeared in films and starred in the first season of R&B Divas: Los Angeles.
