Harlem rapper-turned-sports commentator Mase is making his return to music. During the March 7 episode of his sports talk show, It Is What It Is, he revealed plans to drop his first album in two decades—with some help from longtime collaborator Cam’ron.
Kicking off the show, Mase turned to his co-hosts, Treasure “Stat Baby” Wilson and former football player Maurice Clarett, and teased the upcoming project. “Mo, what’s good? Can y’all hear the music?” he asked. “I’m listening to the songs that Killa picked out of the stuff I made.”
Clarett then jokingly suggested that Cam’ron might be heartbroken over Mase’s long absence from music. Mase quickly clarified, assuring fans that this time, new material is on the way. “No, no, no. These are the songs he picked, so I’m listening to his lineup,” he explained. “It’s gonna be crazy. We had to pick the right records.”
When pressed about a release date, Mase initially hesitated before finally dropping a bombshell: “May 25. The first day of the Diddy trial. We’re dropping. You like that? You made me put it out there. I wasn’t going to put that out there, but Mo, you made me.”
The rapper also revealed that the project will be a triple CD, adding, “Now we even” — a likely nod to his complicated history with former Bad Boy Records boss, Diddy.
However, Mase may need to rethink his release date. The trial for Diddy’s racketeering and sex trafficking charges is set to begin earlier than he anticipated, on Monday, May 5. The embattled mogul has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
