The Wayans Family to be Honored at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards

The Wayans family is set to receive a prestigious honor for their multi-generational impact on comedy during the 2025 NAACP Image Awards.

This year’s ceremony will be a family affair, as the NAACP has announced the induction of the legendary Wayans family into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. This distinction recognizes pioneers whose influence continues to shape their industries for generations.

“For decades, the Wayans family has been at the forefront of comedy, breaking barriers and opening doors for waves of entertainers,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO, in a press release. “Their contributions to television, film, and stand-up have transcended pop culture and cemented their legacy in the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. Recognizing their achievements is a celebration of a multi-generational legacy that continues to advance and uplift communities.”

A name synonymous with fearless storytelling and Black excellence in entertainment, the Wayans family—including Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans Sr., Marlon, Shawn, Kim, and Damon Wayans Jr.—has left an undeniable mark on the industry.

Keenen Ivory Wayans set the stage for the family’s success with the creation of the groundbreaking sketch comedy show In Living Color in 1990. The show not only propelled his siblings into the spotlight but also launched the careers of Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, and Jennifer Lopez. His commitment to telling diverse stories changed the entertainment landscape, proving that underrepresented voices deserved a place in mainstream media.

Damon Wayans Sr. became a household name through his work on Saturday Night Live, Major Payne, and My Wife and Kids. Meanwhile, Shawn and Marlon Wayans carved their own paths in comedy, co-creating The Wayans Bros. and starring in classic films such as Scary Movie, White Chicks, and Little Man. Their signature humor and ability to push boundaries while remaining relatable solidified their status as icons.

The Wayans family’s legacy continues to evolve. Marlon Wayans has demonstrated his range with standout performances in dramas like Respect and Air, as well as his acclaimed role in Bel-Air, which earned him a nomination for Outstanding Guest Performance at the upcoming NAACP Image Awards. Damon Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr. have also made history as the first father-son duo nominated for their performances in Poppa’s House. Additionally, Keenen, Marlon, and Shawn are reviving the Scary Movie franchise, set for release in 2026, ensuring that a new generation experiences their horror-comedy magic.

“The Wayans family has set a standard of excellence, and their influence resonates far beyond the stage and screen,” Johnson continued.

BET’s Connie Orlando, EVP of Specials, Music Programming, and Music Strategy, added, “The Wayans family revolutionized comedy by blending cultural commentary and fearless humor. From In Living Color to blockbuster films, their influence spans generations, breaking barriers for Black entertainers and redefining mainstream comedy.”

Joining a distinguished list of past inductees—including New Edition, Eddie Murphy, Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Spike Lee, and Earth, Wind & Fire—the Wayans family’s Hall of Fame induction further cements their legacy.
